Akshay Kumar’s Welcome To The Jungle Hits ₹135 Cr But Misses Blockbuster Mark
Akshay Kumar’s latest comedy caper, Welcome To The Jungle, is wrapping up its theatrical journey with an India nett collection poised around ₹135 crores. The film opened to a promising start, drawing in crowds with its star power and comic flair, but its box office momentum faltered as the weeks progressed.
While the initial weekend saw healthy footfalls, the film’s weekday collections dipped sharply. The real blow, however, came from an ill-timed release schedule. In its second weekend, YRF’s Alpha stormed into cinemas, commandeering a significant chunk of screens and showtimes—even though Alpha itself struggled with poor reviews. The distribution muscle behind Alpha ensured it dominated multiplexes, squeezing Welcome To The Jungle’s business and visibility.
The third weekend proved even more challenging, as Ajay Devgn’s Dhamaal 4 entered the fray. With both Welcome To The Jungle and Dhamaal 4 targeting similar audiences, the latter’s arrival diverted much of the family crowd. The reduction in available screens for Akshay’s film was steep, effectively curtailing its run and relegating it to a semi-hit status, according to trade circles. Notably, Alpha also faced pressure from Dhamaal 4, but its lacklustre word-of-mouth meant competition wasn’t its main hurdle. In contrast, Dhamaal 4 is now on track for a strong lifetime total and has already achieved hit status.
Despite its robust opening, Welcome To The Jungle could not fully recover its investment due to these release clashes. The film’s breakeven target remained just out of reach, with box office analysts pointing to the crowded release window as the key factor holding it back from blockbuster territory.
The film’s trajectory underscores the importance of strategic release planning, especially in a season packed with big-ticket entertainers. Weekday drops and aggressive competition from other major releases made it difficult for Welcome To The Jungle to sustain its early momentum. The loss of screens in the critical second and third weekends proved decisive.
Looking ahead, the performance of Welcome To The Jungle serves as a cautionary tale for producers and distributors. Even with a bankable star like Akshay Kumar, timing is everything. The film’s semi-hit status signals that even established franchises and stars are not immune to the pitfalls of a crowded box office calendar.
