Alpha Flops at Box Office: Alia Bhatt Starrer Becomes YRF’s Biggest Setback
Alia Bhatt’s much-hyped action film Alpha, heralded as the first female-driven entry in the YRF Spy Universe, has stumbled badly at the box office, opening to a lacklustre ₹9 crore in India on day one. This weak start is drawing sharp attention given Alia’s celebrated track record and the high expectations from Yash Raj Films after previous franchise hits.
Directed by a leading filmmaker and produced by Yash Raj Films, Alpha also stars Sharwari and Bobby Deol in pivotal roles. Despite the grand scale and being pitched as a game-changer for female-led action, the film has been hit hard by mixed reviews. Social media platforms are awash with memes and trolling, with critics and audiences panning the screenplay and execution. "Alpha is heading towards a huge disaster," trade sources said, and Bollywood media has described it as the "biggest embarrassment" for YRF after last year’s War 2.
Some viewers did appreciate the action sequences and performances, but many felt Alpha failed to capture the emotional punch and novelty that earlier YRF spy films delivered. The film’s teaser had already faced online criticism, and its release has only intensified negative chatter.
With a recovery target of ₹250 crore, Alpha now faces an uphill battle. All eyes are on the weekend’s collections to see if the film can salvage its fortunes or if it cements its place as a rare misstep for both Alia Bhatt and the YRF brand.
