Hollywood film Obsession has captivated Indian urban audiences, surpassing local releases such as Suriya’s Karuppu and Mohanlal’s Drishyam 3 during a weekend dominated by the IPL final. Despite not being dubbed into any Indian language and lacking subtitles, Obsession managed to draw attention, particularly in major cities and multiplexes.
With Suriya riding high on his consistent performances and Mohanlal’s established reputation, expectations were set for Karuppu and Drishyam 3 to perform well. However, as reported, both Indian films saw only moderate box office returns, partly due to the IPL 2026 final drawing viewers away from cinemas on Sunday.
Obsession’s limited release did not deter urban cinephiles, who made it their top pick for the weekend. The film benefited from strong word of mouth, as per sources, which helped drive its numbers across key urban centres. The absence of local language dubbing and subtitles did pose a challenge, with some filmgoers opting to skip the movie for this reason.
With the IPL season concluded, industry watchers are keen to see how upcoming Indian releases perform in the absence of such major sporting events, and whether Obsession’s success inspires more Hollywood films to target India’s urban market.
