Christopher Nolan’s latest epic, The Odyssey, has rewritten box office history by reaching $1.1 billion worldwide, making it Nolan’s highest-grossing film yet. The director, who previously set benchmarks with The Dark Knight Rises, now surpasses his own record even before The Odyssey’s debut in major markets like China and Japan.
The Odyssey also set a new milestone by becoming IMAX’s highest-grossing film ever, collecting $289 million and overtaking James Cameron’s Avatar, which held the crown with $271 million. Producers highlighted that the film is unique for being shot entirely with IMAX cameras, a technical feat that has drawn both critical acclaim and eager audiences.
Domestically, IMAX screenings pulled in $147.3 million, while international IMAX venues added another $141.8 million. The release has generated strong word-of-mouth, with packed IMAX 70mm screenings reportedly sold out until September. As per reports, The Odyssey is expected to see another major boost with its upcoming debut on 800 IMAX screens across China this Friday.
