Magudam collects only ₹1.3 crore in Tamil Nadu over opening weekend.
Vishal took over direction from Ravi Arasu and revamped the screenplay.
Negative reviews and low buzz contributed to the film's poor performance.
Super Good Films produced the movie, starring Dushara Vijayan and Anjali.
Vishal’s debut as a director with the Tamil film Magudam has resulted in a major setback at the box office, with the movie earning just ₹1.3 crore gross in its opening weekend across Tamil Nadu. Known for his action roles in Kollywood, Vishal took over the direction of Magudam midway after initial director Ravi Arasu exited due to undisclosed reasons. He also reworked the entire screenplay before the film’s release.
Despite the presence of Dushara Vijayan and Anjali in leading roles and the backing of Super Good Films, Magudam failed to generate pre-release excitement. The situation worsened after the film opened to overwhelmingly negative reviews, which contributed to its poor performance in theatres. The weekend numbers are particularly disappointing given Vishal’s established fan base and the expectations surrounding his directorial debut.
According to trade sources, the film’s collections have not even covered its release expenses, signaling a clear rejection by the audience. The lack of positive word-of-mouth and minimal buzz on social media further compounded the film’s struggles during its crucial opening days. With such a low start, Magudam’s prospects for recovery at the Tamil Nadu box office appear bleak.
