Andhra Pradesh Becomes Focal Point in Telangana's Political Debates

Andhra Pradesh has become a central theme in Telangana's political scene, with recent events highlighting the neighbouring state's influence on issues ranging from river water disputes to government appointments and education policy. The ongoing standoff over Krishna river waters at Nagarjuna Sagar has intensified, as Andhra Pradesh released 2,000 cusecs through the powerhouse towards the Right Main Canal, prompting Telangana to match the release towards the Left Canal. This water-sharing conflict remains unresolved and has triggered sharp criticism from political leaders.

Former minister T. Harish Rao questioned the Revanth Reddy-led Telangana government's response, asking why Telangana's share of Krishna waters was not being safeguarded. Rao also referenced Andhra Pradesh's approach to polytechnic education, noting that the state had initially integrated polytechnics under its Skill University but reversed the decision after concerns about student futures. He challenged Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to follow Andhra Pradesh's example and withdraw Telangana's policy change.

The Andhra connection surfaced in other controversies as well. Congress MLA Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy dismissed criticism from what he called "Andhra media," asserting that Telangana movement leaders did not need validation from outside the state. Meanwhile, Telangana Rakshana Sena chief K. Kavitha escalated the rhetoric by repeatedly branding Revanth Reddy as "Andhra Revanth Reddy" and accusing him of advancing Andhra interests. Kavitha objected to appointments of Andhra-origin individuals to key Telangana bodies and alleged Andhra influence in government departments, including the Yadadri temple board.

Kavitha further accused Harish Rao of having business ties with Andhra-based institutions during his tenure as Health Minister, citing alleged milk supply contracts worth ₹5 crore per month to Narayana and Sri Chaitanya educational institutions and additional supplies to corporate hospitals. These claims have not been independently verified. She also alleged that BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao maintained business relationships with Andhra figures, suggesting this influenced party positions on certain issues.

In a contrasting moment, K.T. Rama Rao attended a graduation ceremony at Vignan before leaving for the US, recalling his own student days there 35 years ago. The current political climate in Telangana thus sees Andhra Pradesh depicted variously as a rival over water, a policy model, and a source of both influence and controversy.
