BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao’s recent interview with NDTV has triggered discussion across Telangana’s political landscape. Known for his sharp rhetoric, KTR referred to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy as an “EMI CM,” echoing a phrase previously used by BJP leaders, including Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy. This alignment in language has raised questions about BRS’s stance, with observers noting the similarity to BJP’s narrative even as KTR accused Congress and BJP of colluding.
KTR’s comments on the BJP’s prospects in Telangana were also challenged by recent electoral results. While he downplayed the local BJP’s strength, the party emerged as the single-largest in the 2026 Karimnagar Municipal Corporation elections, winning 30 out of 66 wards and forming the corporation. In contrast, KTR’s assertion that BRS performed well in local body polls was contradicted by the numbers: Congress secured 1,537 of 2,995 wards, BRS 781, and BJP 336. Congress also gained control of five out of seven corporations and 82 municipalities, while BRS managed 17 municipal chairperson posts but no corporations.
On the sensitive topic of caste, KTR’s claim that Telangana has no caste issue was met with skepticism, especially in light of the Erravelli “shuddikaran” controversy, which sparked debate on Dalit dignity. BRS disputed the authenticity of the visuals, but the incident highlighted ongoing concerns about caste-based discrimination. Allegations from C. M. Ramesh further complicated the narrative, suggesting political calculations based on caste affiliations.
KTR’s stance on party discipline also drew attention. While he stated, “No individual is above the institution,” critics pointed to inconsistent actions within BRS regarding leaders facing allegations. The interview, intended to isolate Revanth Reddy, instead left many questioning KTR’s positions and the party’s internal standards.
