Rana Daggubati Highlights Shift to Director-Driven Telugu Cinema

Rana Daggubati, known for his impactful roles and work as a producer, recently shared his perspective on the evolving preferences of Telugu film audiences. In a conversation with Anupama Chopra for The Hollywood Reporter India, Rana discussed how viewers are increasingly valuing the creative vision of directors over traditional hero-centric appeal.

Reflecting on his own journey, including his efforts through Spirit Media to support emerging filmmakers, Rana noted a clear transformation: "Earlier, it was more about the hero. Now, it is about the director." He pointed out that the excitement surrounding new releases is often driven by the filmmaker's reputation, citing examples like SS Rajamouli, Sandeep Reddy Vanga, and Prashanth Neel. According to Rana, "Today, people are excited to watch a Rajamouli film, a Sandeep Reddy Vanga film or a Prashanth Neel film," emphasizing that directors have become brands in their own right.

This shift, Rana believes, is partly due to Telugu films reaching audiences beyond their original linguistic boundaries. Directors with distinctive storytelling styles have started to command as much attention as the stars themselves. The actor-producer also highlighted the importance of nurturing new talent, stating that his production house is increasingly backing first-time directors, further reinforcing the industry's changing dynamics.
