Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has formally appealed to Union Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for the allocation of an additional 9.56 lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) scheme. This request follows the Centre's recent sanctioning of two lakh houses for the state in the first phase.
During a meeting held at Madhapur in Hyderabad, Revanth Reddy was accompanied by ministers Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy and Tummala Nageswara Rao, Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju, and senior officials. The Chief Minister recalled his earlier representation to Chouhan in Delhi in July, where he had outlined the need for 11,56,915 houses to cover all eligible rural families in Telangana. With only two lakh houses approved so far, he pressed for the remaining 9.56 lakh to meet the state's assessed requirements.
Revanth Reddy also briefed the Union Minister on the challenges posed by El Niño conditions, which have led to deficient rainfall and increased electricity demand in the agricultural sector. He explained that the Telangana government had taken proactive steps to address potential shortages of drinking water and electricity, and sought further assistance from the Centre to manage these issues.
The Chief Minister emphasized the state's efforts to encourage crop diversification among farmers, given the changing weather patterns. He requested the Centre's cooperation in supporting these initiatives and helping farmers adapt. Revanth Reddy also highlighted Telangana's food security programs, including the distribution of fine rice to poor families through ration shops and a ₹500 bonus for fine-variety paddy cultivation. Additionally, he informed Chouhan about the development of a new international-standard fruits and vegetables market spanning 250 acres, aimed at boosting the state's agricultural sector.
