Sridevi, the legendary actress known for her work across Indian cinema, is once again at the center of legal attention as her Chennai property dispute has reached the Supreme Court. The late star, whose legacy continues through her family, had acquired land on Chennai’s East Coast Road in 1988. This property is now the subject of a contested legal battle involving her husband Boney Kapoor and daughters Janhvi Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor.

The Supreme Court has issued a notice in response to a petition challenging the Madras High Court’s earlier decision. The petitioners, M.C. Sivakami and her brother, claim rights over a portion of the property and have questioned the High Court’s approach, arguing that it examined documents and issues in detail at a preliminary stage, which they say amounted to a mini-trial. They also pointed out that the trial court had initially found their claim to be within the limitation period and based on a valid cause of action.

Boney Kapoor and his daughters have opposed the claims, maintaining that the land was purchased by Sridevi and that subsequent claims are not valid. The family had previously approached the Madras High Court after a lower court refused to dismiss the suit at the outset. The Supreme Court has now directed that status quo be maintained on the disputed property until the next hearing, ensuring no changes are made until the matter is further examined.

Earlier this year, it was reported that the Sridevi family had won a legal battle regarding this property, but the current Supreme Court proceedings indicate the dispute is far from over. The next steps will depend on the Supreme Court’s review of the petitioners’ challenge to the High Court’s order.
