Thalapathy Vijay takes oath as Chief Minister, ending decades-long DMK-AIADMK dominance
Thalapathy Vijay, the celebrated actor who recently made a dramatic entry into politics, has officially been sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The grand ceremony took place on May 10, 2026, at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, drawing widespread attention from political circles and film industry stalwarts alike.
Vijay's transition from cinema icon to political leader has been closely watched, especially after his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), delivered a remarkable performance in the 2026 Assembly Elections. TVK secured 108 seats, making it the largest party but falling just short of an outright majority. By forging alliances with Congress, VCK, the Left, and IUML, Vijay's coalition reached 120 MLAs, breaking the nearly 60-year alternating rule of DMK and AIADMK.
The ceremony saw the attendance of notable personalities like Rahul Gandhi, actress Trisha Krishnan, and KVN Productions' Venkat K. Narayana, alongside Vijay's parents. As per the new government's vision, a dedicated Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and robust welfare schemes for women and youth are on the agenda. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath and has asked Vijay to prove his majority through a floor test by May 13.
With massive crowds flooding Chennai's streets and jubilant celebrations marking the day, the state is abuzz with anticipation for Vijay’s next move as he leads Tamil Nadu into a new era. All eyes will now be on the upcoming trust vote and the rollout of the promised reforms.
