Vidya Balan, who recently made a mark as Kantha in 'Jailer 2' and is confirmed as the main antagonist in 'Jailer 3', has opened up about the numerous offers she received to portray the legendary Carnatic singer M.S. Subbulakshmi. Following her tribute photoshoot in 2024, which reignited public interest in her resemblance to Subbulakshmi, Vidya shared that she was approached for the iconic role not once, but seven times.
In a conversation with Variety India, Vidya recalled that she was once set to collaborate with director Rajiv Menon on a film about M.S. Subbulakshmi around 2012 or 2013. However, the project was halted due to a stay order, leaving Vidya disappointed. "I received seven film offers to play M.S. Subbulakshmi after the photoshoot came out. But I said, 'Listen, if you get the permissions required, then I shall consider it. If not, I will not be able to do the film,'" Vidya stated.
The discussion around who should play M.S. Subbulakshmi gained traction again after the announcement of a new biopic featuring Rashmika Mandanna in the lead. This upcoming film is directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri with music by Anirudh. While many fans continue to believe Vidya would have been an ideal choice for the role, the focus has now shifted to Rashmika and how the team will bring the singer's story to life.
Vidya's insistence on proper permissions highlights her commitment to authenticity and respect for the subject's legacy, a stance that has resonated with many admirers of both the actress and the legendary musician.
