Dhanush’s latest outing, Kara, has hit a rough patch at the box office, especially in the Telugu states, where the film has failed to gain momentum since its release last Friday. Despite the actor’s impressive streak with last year’s hits like Kuberaa, Idli Kadai, and Tere Ishk Mein, Kara has not managed to captivate audiences as expected.
The film, inspired by real-life incidents and featuring Mamitha Baiju as the female lead, received only lukewarm initial word of mouth. However, this did not translate into collections, with reports indicating that even the weekend numbers remained disappointing. Surprisingly, Kara’s performance in Tamil Nadu, considered Dhanush’s stronghold, has also been lacklustre, raising concerns for the makers.
Industry observers attribute this underwhelming response to the high frequency of Dhanush’s releases. As per sources, "Kara is the lowest opener for Dhanush since the past decade," a rare dip for the star who has generally delivered at the box office. Fans and analysts believe that the rapid succession of films—three last year and three more scheduled for this year—may be leading to audience fatigue.
Looking ahead, Dhanush is currently filming D55 with director Rajkumar Periyasamy and D56 with Tamizharasan Pachamuthu, while D57 with Mari Selvaraj and Vada Chennai 2 with Vetrimaaran are also on the horizon. Fans will be watching closely to see if upcoming projects can help the star regain his box office momentum.
