Suriya’s Karuppu embroiled in Ilayaraja dialogue controversy
Suriya’s latest film Karuppu has become a talking point for more than just its impressive box office numbers. While the movie, directed by RJ Balaji and produced by Dream Warrior Pictures, gave Suriya a much-needed hit after a series of setbacks, it found itself at the center of a heated controversy over a satirical dialogue about legendary composer Ilayaraja.
The film, also featuring Trisha Krishnan, grossed over ₹147 crore globally in its opening weekend, drawing strong crowds in Tamil Nadu and the Telugu states. However, midway through its successful run, a scene referencing Ilayaraja’s copyright issues triggered criticism online, with many fans expressing their disapproval on social media and accusing the makers of making light of the music maestro’s legal battles.
Responding swiftly, Dream Warrior Pictures released an official statement emphasizing their “sincere respect and admiration for Maestro Mr. Ilaiyaraaja and his extraordinary contribution to Indian cinema and music.” The statement continued, “We sincerely regret that the dialogue has resulted in such sentiments. There was absolutely no intention to offend, hurt, or disrespect Mr. Ilaiyaraaja, his contribution, or his rights in any manner.” The team confirmed that the controversial scene has been removed from current and future versions of the film.
Meanwhile, Ilayaraja remains busy, having signed on to compose music for Karthik Subbaraj’s upcoming tenth feature. With Karuppu’s run still strong, all eyes are now on how the film’s altered version fares in the coming weeks.
