Mahesh Babu’s upcoming film Varanasi, directed by the visionary SS Rajamouli, is already sending waves of excitement through the industry. Following the global triumph of Rajamouli’s RRR, anticipation for his next project has only intensified, especially with a star-studded cast featuring Prithviraj Sukumaran and Priyanka Chopra Jonas.

A new spark was added to the speculation when Netflix India’s Vice President of Content, Monika Shergill, responded playfully when asked about acquiring Varanasi’s streaming rights during the Super Subbu trailer launch. Shergill remarked, “Some things need to remain a surprise for the future,” before highlighting, “The best stories and the biggest creators are always on Netflix.” Though not an official confirmation, her comments have fueled talk that Netflix may be close to securing the film’s OTT rights for a record-setting price.

Produced by KL Narayana’s Durga Arts and with SS Karthikeya involved in production, Varanasi is being made on a massive ₹1,200 crore budget. The film features music by Academy Award winner MM Keeravaani and a story crafted by Vijayendra Prasad, promising an epic blend of mythology and adventure, all designed for IMAX grandeur.

Scheduled for a worldwide release on April 7, 2027, Varanasi is poised to set new benchmarks for Indian cinema. Fans and industry watchers now eagerly await official word on its OTT partner, while Rajamouli continues to craft what could be a landmark global spectacle.
