Mahesh Babu’s much-anticipated film "Varanasi" with director SS Rajamouli has entered a pivotal stage, as the team is currently filming a massive Aghora episode at Ramoji Film City. After months spent on high-octane action sequences, the production shifted gears on July 8, focusing now on a story-driven schedule that promises to be one of the film’s visual highlights.
Director Rajamouli, known for his grand vision and recent international acclaim, shared during a France visit that "Varanasi" has about 80 shooting days remaining. He confirmed that all major IMAX action blocks are wrapped up, and the current focus is on crucial narrative episodes that will tie the film’s sprawling story together. The Aghora sequence, set against a recreated Varanasi backdrop, features hundreds of junior artistes and is described as one of the largest set pieces in the film.
The makers marked Priyanka Chopra’s birthday by unveiling her first look as Mandakini, generating a wave of excitement among fans online. Priyanka herself called "Varanasi" an "epic adventure spanning continents and time periods," hinting at the scale and ambition of the project. Alongside Mahesh Babu and Priyanka, Prithviraj Sukumaran also plays a key role, adding to the film’s star power.
With only a few weeks of shooting left, the team aims to wrap principal photography by September or October. "Varanasi" is slated for a worldwide theatrical release on April 7, 2027, and anticipation continues to build as fans eagerly await further updates from this monumental collaboration.
