Manoj Bajpayee to portray Mahatma Gandhi for the first time on screen
Film focuses on a specific 21-day period during India’s Independence
Directed by Sudhir Mishra and produced by Anubhav Sinha, Narendra Hirawat
Saurabh Shukla joins the cast; title and release date yet to be announced
Manoj Bajpayee is set to take on the role of Mahatma Gandhi in an upcoming theatrical film directed by Sudhir Mishra. Known for his powerful performances in films like 'Governor: The Silent Saviour', which arrived on OTT platforms earlier this year, Bajpayee will portray the iconic leader for the first time on screen. The film zeroes in on a pivotal 21-day period during India’s Independence, a time when Gandhi made the unexpected decision to leave Delhi as it became the epicentre of political power.
The narrative will explore the circumstances behind Gandhi’s departure from Delhi and delve into the personal and political journey that unfolded during those three weeks. Rather than attempting a sweeping biopic, the makers have chosen to focus on this lesser-known chapter, aiming to offer fresh insight into Gandhi’s life at a turning point in Indian history.
Saurabh Shukla joins the cast in a significant role, though details about his character remain under wraps. The project reunites director Sudhir Mishra with producer Anubhav Sinha, both of whom are celebrated for their work on socially and politically charged cinema. Production duties are handled by Anubhav Sinha and Narendra Hirawat under the Benaras Mediaworks banner, with NH Studioz presenting the film. This marks Mishra’s return to theatrical releases after a considerable hiatus.
While the title and release date are yet to be announced, the film’s unique focus and Bajpayee’s involvement have already generated interest among cinema enthusiasts. Further details about the supporting cast and release plans are expected to be revealed by the makers in the coming months.
