Prithviraj Sukumaran returns as Aamir Ali; Vysakh continues as director
First film received mixed-to-negative reviews in Malayalam, limited Telugu promotions
Sequel will introduce new characters and expand on Mohanlal's role
Mohanlal will headline the newly announced sequel, Khalifa 2 – The Legacy, following the recent release of Prithviraj Sukumaran’s action thriller Khalifa. The first film, directed by Vysakh and produced by Jinu V. Abraham and Suraj Kumar, hit theatres yesterday in Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu. While the Telugu version saw limited promotional activity, the Malayalam release has drawn mixed-to-negative reviews from audiences.
At the film’s success meet, the makers revealed the sequel’s title and confirmed Mohanlal’s expanded role as Mambarakkal Ahmed Ali. In the original Khalifa, Mohanlal appeared in a special cameo as Aamir Ali’s grandfather, a character that will now take center stage. Prithviraj Sukumaran, who played Aamir Ali, is set to reprise his role, ensuring continuity in the storyline. Tovino Thomas, who featured in a supporting role in the first part, is also associated with the franchise.
Khalifa 2 – The Legacy is expected to introduce new characters, building on the foundation laid by the first installment. The production team has not yet disclosed further casting details, but the announcement has already generated curiosity among fans of Malayalam cinema. Jakes Bejoy, who composed the music for Khalifa, contributed to the film’s atmosphere, though there is no official word yet on whether he will return for the sequel.
Earlier this month, this outlet reported that Khalifa was set for a multilingual release, marking a busy period for Telugu cinema in August. The sequel’s announcement signals the makers’ confidence in the story’s potential, despite the initial film’s mixed reception.
