Naga Vamsi, producer of the Suriya-led Vishwanath and Sons, spoke candidly in a 2023 interview about the financial pressure facing Telugu cinema, from costly publicity campaigns to shrinking OTT deals. The clips later circulated widely online, drawing attention to his assessment of the business conditions confronting producers.
Producer’s concerns over costs
Naga Vamsi said producers were putting substantial money into film promotions without a corresponding rise in theatre footfalls. He also addressed income-tax raids, mounting production expenditure and the difficulty of keeping film budgets under control. His practical suggestion to producers was to cut down the number of shooting days, which he felt could help contain costs.
The producer further said Telugu actors had become open to profit-sharing arrangements, linking that shift to the gap created by weaker OTT deals. He also discussed theatrical distribution, arguing that GST had altered the risk equation for distributors. The remarks reflected his broader view that the Telugu film industry was going through a difficult business phase.
