SS Rajamouli’s Europe tour has become a dual celebration, as the acclaimed director showcases his cinematic legacy while building worldwide momentum for his upcoming epic, Varanasi starring Mahesh Babu. With the director’s previous blockbuster RRR still resonating globally, anticipation for his next venture is soaring.
At renowned venues like the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and Paris’ Cinematheque Française, Rajamouli’s films—RRR, Baahubali, and Eega—drew packed houses, earning standing ovations from European audiences. Esteemed French filmmaker Costa-Gavras was captivated enough to spend nearly eight hours immersing himself in Rajamouli’s work, an experience that left the Indian director “deeply moved.” Rajamouli also secured a permanent honor at Cinematheque Française, a rare milestone for any filmmaker, and appeared in the 40th anniversary edition of French magazine Starfix alongside Hollywood icons.
Each international event subtly spotlighted Varanasi, with its first look receiving an enthusiastic response from French cinephiles. Regarding production, Rajamouli revealed, “The film’s major spectacle action sequences have already been completed,” and only about 80 days of talkie portions remain before post-production ramps up. The team is gearing up for an ambitious war sequence featuring Mahesh Babu and thousands of junior artists in Hyderabad.
Fans can now circle April 7th for Varanasi’s grand theatrical release, as Rajamouli’s global momentum and Mahesh Babu’s star power promise a cinematic spectacle ahead.
