Rajamouli Shares Updates on Varanasi's Ambitious Shoot
Director SS Rajamouli has opened up about the scale and progress of his upcoming film Varanasi, which features Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra, and Prithviraj Sukumaran in lead roles. Coming off the global success of RRR, Rajamouli is once again aiming high with this action-packed, mythological spectacle.
Speaking to a web portal, Rajamouli described the film's sweeping narrative: "The film travels from Varanasi to Antarctica, even Africa, and into the past, to Rome, before finally returning to Varanasi. We started working on the story in 2022 after RRR was completed. It has been almost four and a half years. We have completed 80 percent of the shoot of Varanasi and 20 percent shoot is pending. There are smaller episodes left to be shot and all the massive action episodes are completed. Yes, Varanasi is the first non-English film to be shot entirely in IMAX," he said.
Production resumed in Hyderabad, with Rajamouli targeting to wrap up the remaining portions before Dasara. The film is produced by KL Narayana and features music by MM Keeravani. Varanasi is set for a worldwide theatrical release on April 7, 2027, promising a grand launch both in India and internationally.
With only minor episodes left to film, anticipation is building for what is being touted as a landmark project in Indian cinema, especially with its IMAX distinction and international storyline.
