Rajinikanth returns to the big screen as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian in 'Jailer 2', which released in Telugu cinemas today. Following the success of the 2023 original, director Nelson Dilipkumar brings back the superstar in a sequel produced by Kalanithi Maran under Sun Pictures. The film features a star-studded cast including Vidya Balan, SJ Suryah, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Ramya Krishnan, Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Jackie Shroff, Sunil, and Yogi Babu.
The story picks up after Varma’s death, with multiple smuggling syndicates seeking revenge. Rajinikanth’s Muthuvel Pandian, now living quietly, is drawn into the conflict as he hunts down those behind the criminal network. The narrative is built around Rajinikanth’s trademark style—his walk, gestures, and screen presence continue to draw strong reactions from audiences. The first half leans into comedy, with Namo Narayana’s character and his interactions with Rajinikanth delivering notable laughs. Yogi Babu also adds to the humor, while SJ Suryah and Vidya Balan handle antagonist roles effectively, with Balan’s negative turn standing out as a fresh choice.
Anirudh Ravichander’s background score amplifies the action, especially with the return of the original film’s theme. However, the film’s plot is thin and the structure closely mirrors the first installment. The runtime, nearly three hours, causes pacing issues, especially in the second half. Cameos by Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, and Jackie Shroff are brief and add little to the story. Technical aspects like cinematography by Vijay Kartik Kannan and editing by R. Nirmal are competent, but a tighter edit could have improved engagement.
'Jailer 2' earns a 3/5 rating, working best for those who enjoy Rajinikanth’s signature moments and the comedic first half. The film’s release during the festive Dussehra season has generated excitement, but its stretched narrative and underused cameos may leave some fans wanting more.
