Rajinikanth’s Kochadaiiyaan Dues: The Ongoing Financial Saga
Rajinikanth’s ambitious film Kochadaiiyaan remains in the spotlight, not for its pioneering technology, but for a financial dispute that has lingered since its 2014 release. While Rajinikanth has continued to headline major projects in Indian cinema, the legacy of Kochadaiiyaan is still shaped by unresolved monetary issues.
The controversy resurfaced after the Madras High Court recently permitted the AI-restored version of Kochadaiiyaan to be re-released in theatres, declining to halt its release over a long-standing financial disagreement. The dispute traces back to financier Ad Bureau Advertising Pvt. Ltd., which claims to have provided funds for the film’s production. According to court documents, the company alleges that the agreed repayments were not fully made, resulting in cheque-bounce cases and ongoing money recovery litigation.
Despite several legal rounds, the recovery suit remains active. The court clarified that the pending financial matter could not block the AI-enhanced re-release, as the current rights holder was not the subject of the original suit. However, this legal clearance did not resolve the core financial dispute.
Kochadaiiyaan, directed by Soundarya Rajinikanth and produced with the backing of several reputed companies, was a landmark in Indian cinema for its use of large-scale motion-capture technology. Though it did not achieve commercial success, the film’s legal and financial troubles have kept it in the news. The question of why these dues remain unsettled, despite the involvement of high-profile names, continues to draw attention every time Kochadaiiyaan returns to the headlines.
