Sumanth is set to return to theatres with the spiritual mystery thriller Mahendragiri Varahi, directed by Santhossh Jagarlapudi. Known for his diverse roles in Telugu cinema, Sumanth’s latest project is produced by Kalipu Madhu and Laxman under Rajashyamala Entertainments and Bridge Films. The film, which features Aishwarya Rajesh, Minakshi Goswami, Malvika Nair, Brahmanandam, Vennela Kishore, Rajeev Kanakala, and Ali, is scheduled for release this Friday. Siddu Jonnalagadda will make a special appearance in a pivotal scene.
In a recent media interaction ahead of the release, Sumanth shared what drew him to the film. He said the pre-climax and climax sequences are particularly impactful, crediting director Santhossh Jagarlapudi for his command over Vedic and mythological themes. "Director Santosh has a solid grip on the Vedas and mythology. This is the right subject for him, and he delivered what he promised," Sumanth stated. He also highlighted the scale of the production, noting that the team did not initially expect to mount the film so grandly, with impressive VFX and performances.
Sumanth revealed that he plays a YouTuber who challenges superstitions, but kept further character details under wraps. He described Mahendragiri Varahi as a devotional action thriller with strong family and commercial elements. Addressing comparisons to the classic film Murari, Sumanth clarified, "Mahendragiri Varahi is in no way related to that film. The subject itself is very different. Even the story and screenplay will be unique."
He also expressed gratitude to Siddu Jonnalagadda, whose serious cameo role includes a standout scene. Sumanth reiterated his openness to antagonist roles in the future, indicating his willingness to explore diverse characters. The film’s trailer has sparked curiosity, especially regarding its mythological backdrop, but Sumanth emphasized that the story has been in development for three years, predating recent trends in the genre.
