Varun Tej on Telugu Horror: A Genre Waiting to Be Explored

Mega Prince Varun Tej brought attention to the Telugu film industry's approach to horror with the release of his film Korean Kanakaraju. Directed by Merlapaka Gandhi and featuring Ritika Nayak as the female lead, the movie hit theatres on October 20, 2023. Varun Tej, known for his diverse roles and willingness to experiment, used the occasion to reflect on the state of horror in Telugu cinema.

In a candid interview, Varun Tej remarked that the genre remains largely unexplored in the industry. He stated, "I feel complete horror is unexplored in Telugu. There are only a handful of films. There is a huge audience for the horror genre. In that space, we can deliver a solid theatrical experience." His comments highlighted a gap that many Telugu moviegoers have noticed—while horror-comedies occasionally find success, pure horror films are rare.

The actor also shared his thoughts on the difference between watching horror on OTT platforms versus in theatres. "OTTs can’t give the experience theatres deliver for horror films. If a big hero does a horror film, a large number of people will come to theatres. The reach will be massive with a star hero," Varun Tej explained. He cited his own experience watching the film 'Weapons' at home, noting that the impact was diminished compared to what a theatrical screening could offer.

With Korean Kanakaraju, Varun Tej and director Merlapaka Gandhi aimed to bring a fresh blend of horror and comedy to Telugu audiences, hoping to pave the way for more authentic horror experiences on the big screen.
