Vignesh Shivan, the creative force behind "Love Insurance Kompany" (LIK), has opened up about the film’s disappointing performance at the box office. Starring Pradeep Ranganathan, the romantic drama had generated anticipation but ultimately fell short of expectations during its theatrical run.
Reflecting on the outcome, Vignesh Shivan revealed through an emotional Instagram story that numerous viewers messaged him, admitting they skipped LIK in theatres due to the "overwhelming negativity" circulating online. The director, known for his earlier successful ventures, expressed concern over how certain reviews, written to display "intelligence or superiority," can dissuade audiences and "crush the dreams of ambitious filmmakers."
Despite a promising opening weekend, Shivan shared his disappointment at how quickly the narrative around the film shifted. He emphasized that LIK was an earnest attempt at something "different, complete, and original," and felt it deserved more understanding from the audience. The experience, he admitted, has been tough to accept.
Quoting a respected filmmaker, Shivan reflected, "A film’s success is often determined more by what surrounds it than by what exists within it." As fans await his next move, it remains to be seen how the director channels these learnings into future projects.
