Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna headline the upcoming period action drama 'Ranabaali', which is set to hit cinemas on October 16. Directed by Rahul Sankrityan, known for his attention to historical detail, the film is produced by Mythri Movie Makers. While Deverakonda’s recent projects have kept fans curious about his next move, 'Ranabaali' promises a fresh perspective on British colonial history in India.
Unlike many films that focus on the freedom struggle, director Rahul Sankrityan clarifies that 'Ranabaali' centers on the devastating Great Madras Famine of 1876-1878. "We have seen hundreds of films on the Britishers and colonial history, but no one spoke about the famine. When I was looking into history, there was something called the Great Madras Famine (Manmade) that happened between 1876 and 1878. In a span of 2 years, almost one crore Indians were wiped off just because of that famine," Sankrityan explained during the film’s promotional campaign.
Rashmika Mandanna shared that she was deeply moved upon learning about the famine’s impact, while Vijay Deverakonda highlighted the injustice of millions of grains being exported to Britain even as people starved. The team emphasized that the loss of one crore lives was staggering, especially considering India’s population was only 30 crore at the time.
To ensure authenticity, Sankrityan conducted extensive research, visiting locations like Bellary and consulting old libraries and archaeological departments. He described 'Ranabaali' as a tribute to those who suffered and perished during that tragic period. The film’s promotional series, 'Never Forget', has already sparked interest among history enthusiasts and moviegoers alike.
