Vijay’s Jana Nayagan Ends on a Low Note, Political Victory Takes the Spotlight

Tamil superstar Vijay's final film as an actor, Jana Nayagan, has wrapped up its theatrical run with disappointing numbers, even as the star’s political career takes center stage. After years of box office dominance and blockbuster hits, Vijay announced Jana Nayagan would be his swan song before taking oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

The film, directed by H Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions, faced multiple setbacks before release. There were significant delays, a full leak online, and the cancellation of its digital release deal. Despite these hurdles, the makers pushed for a grand July 23rd premiere, launching in a record number of screens across Tamil Nadu. However, the film was met with mixed audience reactions and failed to match the commercial success of Vijay’s earlier works.

While Jana Nayagan managed an average performance in Tamil Nadu, it underperformed severely in other South Indian states and could not recover investments in the North. The film, a remake of Telugu hit Bhagavanth Kesari, featured Mamita Baiju, Pooja Hegde, and Bobby Deol in key roles, with music by Anirudh. According to reports, "the film’s run has come to an end all over" and it did not serve as the fitting farewell many had hoped for. Vijay’s ascent to political power, however, ensured that the film’s failure was largely overshadowed by his new role as Chief Minister.
