Key Highlights

  • Baththa earns strong word of mouth but collects only ₹15 crore in Tamil Nadu
  • Directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan and produced by Atlee
  • Vijay Sethupathi stars alongside Lijomol Jose and others
  • Upcoming release of Jailer 2 may impact Baththa's box office run

Vijay Sethupathi’s latest Tamil film, Baththa, has become a talking point for its unusual box office journey. Directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan and produced by Atlee, the action comedy arrived with minimal pre-release buzz but quickly won over audiences with its engaging storytelling and performances. Despite this, the film’s commercial performance has not matched the glowing word of mouth.

Baththa, which features Lijomol Jose, Baby Sahasra, Santhy Balachandran, and Vishnu Govindan in key roles, has grossed ₹15 crores in Tamil Nadu so far. Industry trackers note that this figure falls short of what’s needed for the film to be considered a safe bet financially. Overseas, the response has also been tepid, surprising many given the positive feedback from those who have seen the film.

This project marks the third collaboration between Vijay Sethupathi and director Balaji Tharaneetharan, following their previous work on Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom and Seethakaathi. Music for Baththa is composed by Sai Abhyankkar, adding to the film’s appeal among fans.

Social media and early viewers have been enthusiastic in their praise, but the strong appreciation has yet to translate into sustained box office momentum. With Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 set to release next week, Baththa faces a narrow window to improve its collections before major competition arrives. The coming weekend is seen as crucial for the film’s commercial prospects.
