Key Highlights

  • Yash rejected Zee Studios’ pre-release OTT offer for Toxic, expecting higher post-release value.
  • Toxic’s poor box office performance led to a collapse in digital rights negotiations.
  • KVN Productions now faces major financial losses and possible refunds to distributors.
  • Industry sources call Yash’s OTT strategy a costly miscalculation.

Yash, who soared to national stardom with the KGF franchise, aimed to surpass his previous success with his latest film, Toxic. Backed by KVN Productions, the film was positioned as a bigger spectacle than KGF and arrived after a four-year wait. Yash reportedly opted for a substantial remuneration of ₹100 crores and a share in the film’s profits, reflecting his confidence in the project’s box office potential.

Ahead of Toxic’s release, KVN Productions sought to secure lucrative non-theatrical deals. Both Netflix and Amazon Prime showed initial interest, but negotiations collapsed when the makers’ asking price far exceeded the platforms’ offers. Zee Studios then entered discussions to acquire Toxic’s digital rights across all languages before release. However, Yash declined Zee’s proposal, believing the film could fetch a higher price post-release if it became a blockbuster. He advised the producers to hold onto the digital rights, expecting a windfall if the film performed well.

This strategy proved costly. Toxic opened to a disastrous response, with collections plummeting from the second day. As a result, the anticipated high-value OTT deal evaporated. According to reports, Zee Studios may now only consider a pay-per-view release or offer a significantly reduced price compared to their original pre-release quote. Meanwhile, KVN Productions, which had received large advances from distributors, is now facing the prospect of refunding much of that money due to the film’s poor performance.

Industry sources describe Yash’s decision to reject the initial OTT deal as a major miscalculation, severely impacting the film’s financial recovery. Toxic is now being labelled as one of the biggest box office failures in Indian cinema history, with Yash potentially required to compensate for the losses.
