Yash Returns With Toxic, Varun Tej Bets Big on Korean Kanakaraju
August 2026 proved to be a turning point for Telugu cinema, with a packed release calendar and several high-profile comebacks. The month kicked off on August 7 as Varun Tej’s horror-comedy Korean Kanakaraju hit theatres, a film widely seen as pivotal for the actor’s career trajectory. The project arrived alongside Anakapalli, written and produced by Thrinadha Rao Nakkina and starring Vikram Sahidev, Sandhya Vasishta, and Tarak Ponnappa, all vying for attention in a crowded box office landscape.
King Jackie Queen (KJQ) introduced Shashi Odela, brother of director Srikanth Odela, in his acting debut, with SLV Cinemas producing and Dheekshith Shetty and Yukti Thareja in lead roles. The same weekend, Telugu audiences also saw the release of DC, a Tamil revenge drama featuring Lokesh Kanagaraj’s acting debut and Wamiqa Gabbi, directed by Arun Matheswaran.
The Independence Day weekend on August 14 brought Vishwanath & Sons, pairing Suriya with director Venky Atluri for the first time, and backed by Naga Vamsi. Mamitha Baiju starred as the female lead, and the film entered with strong pre-release buzz. M.S. Raju returned as director with Agadha, starring Kamakshi Bhaskarla, while Annapurna Studios’ Pallaburusu featured Sudhakar Reddy and Muralidhar Goud.
August 20 and 21 saw dubbed Malayalam hits I’m Game (Dulquer Salmaan) and Khalifa (Prithviraj Sukumaran) reach Telugu screens. On August 21, Ravi Teja’s Irumudi released, marking a shift from his usual commercial fare and drawing attention as a crucial career move.
The month’s biggest event was the arrival of Yash’s Toxic on August 26, marking his return to cinemas four years after KGF: Chapter 2. The film’s delayed release did little to dampen excitement, with its trailer launch further fueling anticipation. Social media buzz and fan discussions kept the film in the spotlight throughout August.
Promotional activities also played a major role, with the teaser for Nani’s The Paradise unveiled on August 6. Director Srikanth Odela described the film as “wildfire,” adding to the month’s excitement.
