Funky Telugu Movie Review: Vishwak Sen & Anudeep KV's Comedy Misses the Mark
Funky aims for quirky Telugu comedy but delivers scattered laughs and little else. Vishwak Sen's energy can't save a script that lacks story or direction.

After the sensational box office success of Jathi Ratnalu, director Anudeep KV quickly became a household name across Telugu states. However, his subsequent film Prince stumbled, failing to impress audiences in both Tamil and Telugu markets. Now, with Funky, he teams up with Vishwak Sen who himself is fresh off a string of experimental performances but hasn't seen a major hit since Das Ka Dhamki. The combination naturally raised expectations for a quirky, laughter-filled ride.
Did Anudeep KV manage to bounce back after Prince? Can Vishwak Sen successfully anchor a full-blown comedy? Does Funky bring the same infectious humour as Jathi Ratnalu? How does the music by Bheems Ceciroleo fare? Let's figure it out with a detailed analysis.
What is it about?
Funky follows Komal (Vishwak Sen), a zany film director whose movie lands in trouble after budget overruns. Enter Chitra (Kayadu Lohar), the producer's assertive daughter, who threatens to fire Komal if he doesn't deliver. Their frequent clashes on set spark chaos and an inevitable romantic angle. However, the plot is wafer-thin, serving mostly as an excuse for a barrage of punchlines and comedic skits, without any real conflict or emotional heft.
Performances
Vishwak Sen (Komal) brings his trademark energy and is game for the slapstick, but the script doesn't allow for much depth or memorable moments. Kayadu Lohar (Chitra) has a strong screen presence, yet her character is too underwritten to leave a mark. Sampath Raj and Naresh try to elevate proceedings, but their roles are limited, offering only fleeting comic relief.
Technicalities
Bheems Ceciroleo's music is largely forgettable, doing little to lift the film. Suresh Sarangam's cinematography is neat and functional. Editing by Navin Nooli is a major weak link the film's pacing drags, making even its short duration feel stretched.
Positives
- A handful of genuinely funny one-liners.
- Vishwak Sen's willingness to experiment with comedy.
- Good production values.
Negatives
- Lack of a coherent or engaging story.
- Repetitive humour that wears thin quickly.
- Flat emotional arcs and uninspired climax.
- Uneven editing and poor narrative flow.
Analysis
Funky is a textbook example of trying to capture past glory without fresh ideas. Anudeep KV's earlier Jathi Ratnalu succeeded because its silly humour was anchored by a moving plot and a charismatic lead in Naveen Polishetty. Here, the screenplay feels like a series of skits tied together, lacking any real stakes or narrative momentum. Compared to other Telugu comedies, Funky falls short both in terms of memorable comedy blocks and character development. It has all the polish but none of the soul or wit that made Anudeep's previous outings click with Telugu audiences.
Final Verdict
