Sport has always claimed to stand above politics a neutral ground where the only battles are on the field. In 2026, that claim is crumbling. From stranded cricketers in Kolkata to grounded Formula 1 cargo planes over the Middle East, two major conflicts the Russia-Ukraine war and the U.S.–Israel military campaign against Iran are reshaping the landscape of international sport in ways no governing body planned for.

Grounded, Stranded, Rerouted

The most immediate fallout has come from the Middle East airspace closures triggered by the U.S.–Israeli strikes on Iran. Formula 1's season-opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne became a logistical scramble, with hundreds of team staff stranded across Bahrain and Europe. Charter flights had to be arranged through Singapore and Tanzania at massive additional cost, while the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix were cancelled outright the first time races have been called off due to active conflict since the sport's modern era.

Cricket bore an even heavier toll. After the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in India, the West Indies and South African squads were left stranded in Kolkata for up to 11 days, unable to fly home as Dubai their primary transit hub shut down entirely. Players grew increasingly frustrated. West Indies head coach Daren Sammy publicly pleaded for information. South African players questioned why England had been able to depart within a day of their elimination while other teams waited in limbo, reigniting uncomfortable debates about unequal treatment in cricket's governance.

Cricket's Triple Crisis

Cricket's troubles didn't end with airspace closures. The IPL the richest league in the sport was suspended on May 9, 2025, after the Punjab Kings vs. Delhi Capitals match in Dharamsala was abandoned mid-innings during a blackout triggered by the India-Pakistan military confrontation. Sixteen matches, including playoffs, were left unplayed. It was only the second mid-season suspension in IPL history, and the first caused by war.

The political temperature carried into the T20 World Cup itself. India's captain Suryakumar Yadav confirmed his team had refused the post-match handshake with Pakistan, saying some things are "above sportsman's spirit." The gesture underlined how deeply the India-Pakistan conflict had penetrated the dressing room.

The Long Shadow of Ukraine

Meanwhile, the Russia-Ukraine war now in its fourth year continues to fracture Olympic sport. The International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation voted to ban Russian athletes from the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, even under neutral status. Only 20 Russian and Belarusian athletes competed across all events at the Games, down from over 200 at Beijing 2022.

The Bill Comes Due

Even the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be the largest in history, has been caught in the crossfire. U.S. host cities faced months of uncertainty over $625 million in federal security funding stuck in a DHS shutdown, with some cities warning that years of security planning were at risk. The arenas haven't changed. But the world around them has and sport can no longer pretend otherwise.
