The Andhra Pradesh government has signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding with the United Kingdom, aiming to transform Amaravati and other urban centers through global expertise, advanced technology, and international financing. This agreement, formalized on Tuesday, marks a significant step in the state's vision to develop Amaravati into a modern and sustainable capital.
The partnership will focus on a wide range of areas, including infrastructure, urban planning, technology transfer, integrated mobility, and project development. Amaravati, already known for its association with Foster + Partners—who designed the Legislative Assembly, High Court, and Secretariat—will now see this collaboration expand into sustainable infrastructure, urban mobility, and advanced project delivery.
The MoU also covers cooperation in Intelligent Transport Systems, Building Information Modelling, Digital Twins, and cutting-edge construction technologies. Knowledge exchange, research, and capacity building are integral parts of the agreement, with both governments set to work together on metro rail, bus systems, airports, pedestrian movement, and data-driven mobility planning. The goal is to enhance connectivity while reducing congestion and pollution in the region.
A key component of the partnership is to make infrastructure projects more attractive to investors. The agreement includes provisions for project prioritization, financial and economic viability assessments, and the preparation of bankable business cases. UK Export Finance may also consider supporting eligible infrastructure projects, subject to due diligence and other requirements.
Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister P. Narayana highlighted the importance of this partnership, stating it comes at a crucial time for Andhra Pradesh's urban development ambitions. The MoU was signed by MA&UD Principal Secretary S. Suresh Kumar and Chaz Walia, Deputy Director, Government Partnerships at the UK’s Department for Business, Innovation, Science & Trade. A joint steering group will review progress every six months, with the agreement set for five years and provision for renewal by mutual consent.
