Andhra Pradesh has achieved the highest ranking in patient safety across India, securing a score of 86 in a recent national assessment of hospital quality and safety standards. The Union Government announced these results at a national programme in New Delhi on Thursday, coinciding with World Patient Safety Day.

The state's performance placed it ahead of Madhya Pradesh, which scored 84.5, and Gujarat at 83.5. Other top performers included Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu (83), and Tamil Nadu (82). At the lower end, Bihar received a score of 61, while Arunachal Pradesh trailed with 25.

Andhra Pradesh's success was driven by comprehensive safety assessments completed in all 62 targeted government hospitals, including 53 Area Hospitals and nine District Hospitals. These evaluations were conducted through the Patient Safety Self-Assessment mechanism, with findings reviewed by District Quality Teams and the State Quality Unit. The consolidated report was submitted to the National Health Systems Resource Centre on August 10.

The state has also made significant progress under the National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS), achieving 65% certification coverage. NQAS evaluates government health facilities on criteria such as quality of medical care, patient safety, cleanliness, and patient-centred services.

At the national forum, Andhra Pradesh's Commissioner of Health and Family Welfare and NHM Mission Director K.V.N. Chakradhar Babu presented the state's advancements virtually, while State Coordinator Nagalakshmi represented Andhra Pradesh in person. Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav congratulated officials, doctors, and healthcare staff for the top ranking, urging continued efforts to strengthen patient safety and quality healthcare in government institutions.
