Adivi Sesh’s latest action drama, Dacoit, has emerged as the unexpected savior for Telugu cinema this weekend, outshining new releases starring Naga Shaurya, Thiruveer, and Kiran Abbavaram. While Sesh, known for his strong recent performances, managed to draw urban audiences, the rest of the field faced a rough ride.
Naga Shaurya’s Bad Boy Karthik, backed by a big budget, failed to generate interest both critically and commercially, with reviewers pointing to its formulaic approach and dated style. Meanwhile, Thiruveer’s Papam Prathap and Kiran Abbavaram's production Thimmarajupalli TV debuted with little buzz and earned only mixed responses. Though both managed to recover costs through digital deals, their lack of trending status on major platforms and minimal box office impact highlighted the struggle.
The impact of the ongoing IPL season was palpable, as evening and night shows across theatres saw dwindling footfalls. As per industry reports, "the audience are not very interested to watch small films in theatres unless the talk is extremely positive and unanimous." Digital engagement for all three new releases remained low, with none appearing on trending lists.
With no major releases on the horizon this week, all eyes are now on how Dacoit holds its ground and whether Telugu cinema can regain momentum in the weeks to come.
