There's a shortcut to fame in the Telugu world that struggling performers keep discovering the hard way: say Pawan Kalyan's name. IIT Bombay graduate turned Hyderabad-based stand-up comedian Anudeep Katikala learned this lesson in the most dramatic way possible picked up by Andhra Pradesh Police from Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, while on an evening walk with his father.
Here's the thing most people miss. Anudeep didn't just joke about Pawan Kalyan. His stand-up sets were loaded with remarks on practically every major star in the Telugu industry. He mocked Ram Charan by questioning his financial standing compared to his wife Upasana Kamineni. He dragged in Niharika Konidela, making remarks about her short-lived marriage to Chaitanya Jonnalagadda. He took shots at Nandamuri Balakrishna, cracked jokes about Jr NTR's physical transformation referencing his 2006 film Rakhi, and even touched on the famous Pawan Kalyan–Mahesh Babu fan rivalry. He targeted the Mega family, the Nandamuri family, and political figures like Nara Lokesh essentially leaving no major name untouched.
Yet, who made him a national headline? Pawan Kalyan. Not the others.
And the biggest irony? Anudeep's own joke accidentally became the strongest character certificate for Pawan Kalyan. He pointed out that despite two divorces, neither of Pawan Kalyan's ex-wives has ever accused him of mistreatment. No bitterness, no public drama just quiet dignity. In trying to get laughs, Anudeep ended up highlighting a truth that even Pawan Kalyan's critics struggle to deny.
Within days, an FIR was filed at Kakinada by a Jana Sena Party member. Anudeep issued a public video apology, claiming he wanted to "normalise feminism and divorce." But the damage was done not to Pawan Kalyan, but to Anudeep's own career.
The pattern repeats itself every few months. Performers with small audiences discover that Pawan Kalyan's name is a guaranteed ticket to virality. His fan base arguably the most fiercely loyal in Indian politics and cinema responds with a force that no PR agency can manufacture. That devotion was built over decades of blockbuster films, political sacrifice, and genuine service as Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.
Bottom line: Anudeep roasted half of Tollywood. But only one name turned a comedy set into a police case, a national debate, and front-page news. That's the Power Star effect and no comedian's punchline can compete with it.
