Ilaiyaraaja Faces Legal Hurdle in Saregama Copyright Battle
Legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja has encountered a significant setback in his ongoing copyright tussle with music giant Saregama India, as the Delhi High Court declined to lift the interim injunction preventing him from exploiting or licensing songs from 134 Tamil films. These works include some of the most celebrated soundtracks in Indian cinema, such as Annakkili, 16 Vayathiniley, Mullum Malarum, Raaja Paarvai, and Netrikkann.
Ilaiyaraaja, a towering figure in Indian music with a prolific career spanning several decades, has been embroiled in legal disputes over music rights in recent years. The core of this particular case revolves around the ownership of musical works and sound recordings created between 1976 and 2001, a formative period for Tamil film music. While Saregama maintains that their agreements with producers grant them exclusive rights, Ilaiyaraaja asserts his creative ownership over the compositions in question.
The Delhi High Court's latest order reinforces its earlier stance, stating that allowing independent exploitation of these works at this stage could inflict irreparable damage to the legitimate rights holder. This move has kept Ilaiyaraaja from commercially leveraging these classic tracks until a final verdict is delivered. The prolonged dispute has garnered attention on social media, with some trolling aimed at the composer, though Ilaiyaraaja has remained steadfast in pursuing his claims.
As the legal battle continues, the outcome is poised to shape the future of film music rights in India, with industry observers closely watching for a precedent-setting decision in this historic case.
