Aditya Dhar's ambitious mythological epic, The Immortal Ashwatthama, starring Vicky Kaushal, was once hailed as India's biggest film project with a ₹500 crore budget. However, after the blockbuster success of Uri: The Surgical Strike in 2019, the project struggled to take off due to its massive scale and advanced VFX demands. Both RSVP Movies and Jio Studios eventually stepped away, leading to the film's shelving and a prolonged hiatus for Dhar from directing.
Recently, Dhar made a spectacular comeback with Dhurandhar, a spy thriller that shattered box office records by grossing over ₹1,340 crore worldwide. Its sequel, Dhurandhar: The Revenge, continued the momentum with a record ₹250 crore opening day. These triumphs have shifted Dhar's creative focus, reportedly moving him away from reviving Ashwatthama.
Despite this, fans remain hopeful for the mythical warrior’s cinematic resurrection. Dhar is now developing fresh projects under a new deal with Jio Studios, indicating exciting new stories ahead. While The Immortal Ashwatthama remains on pause, the director’s evolving journey promises more captivating cinema in the near future.
