Milly Alcock’s much-awaited superhero film, Supergirl, has made headlines for all the wrong reasons after its theatrical release on June 26, 2026. Despite a formidable budget reported at around $170 million, the DC Studios production struggled at the box office, prompting swift action from its makers.
The film, helmed by director Craig Gillespie, brought together a star-studded ensemble including Jason Momoa, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Eve Ridley, with James Gunn and Peter Safran producing for Warner Bros. Known for their recent successes, this collaboration generated high expectations among fans and industry observers alike. However, the film’s disappointing performance has reportedly left Warner Bros. facing losses estimated to exceed $100 million.
In response to the lackluster box office numbers, the production team has announced that Supergirl will debut on Premium Video on Demand (PVOD) platforms just 32 days after its initial release. As officially confirmed, fans can rent or purchase the film digitally starting July 28, 2026, on Apple TV, Prime Video, Fandango at Home (Vudu), and Google Play.
With the PVOD launch around the corner, it remains to be seen if Supergirl can find a new audience online. All eyes are now on its digital performance and what this means for future DC Studios projects.
