Mohanlal’s Drishyam 2, directed by Jeethu Joseph, faced a major setback with its recent theatrical re-release in Kerala, registering shocking box office numbers. Despite the franchise’s massive popularity and critical acclaim, the film could barely manage ₹3.5 to ₹5 lakh, marking a significant failure at the ticket windows.
The Drishyam series has long been a beloved staple in Malayalam cinema, with the first installment setting high benchmarks and Drishyam 2 initially releasing on Amazon Prime Video during the COVID-19 pandemic. The makers hoped that a theatrical re-run ahead of Drishyam 3’s release on May 21, 2026, would rekindle audience interest and build momentum. However, with the film already widely available on OTT, fans showed little incentive to revisit the story on the big screen.
Trade experts described the re-release as unnecessary and poorly timed, noting that the lack of any new footage or theatrical novelty failed to attract crowds. The film’s collections paled in comparison to other recent re-releases like Athadu 4K, which drew far larger audiences without a special occasion. Social media buzz was minimal, reflecting the audience’s lukewarm response despite the franchise’s loyal fan base.
Looking ahead, all eyes remain on Drishyam 3, the highly anticipated final chapter with Jeethu Joseph back at the helm. The third installment is expected to perform strongly, undeterred by the disappointing theatrical fate of its predecessor’s re-release.
