Salman Khan’s latest film, Maatrubhumi, has landed in controversy after significant last-minute story changes disrupted its original vision. Directed by Apoorva Lakhia, the film was initially promoted as a hard-hitting drama inspired by the 2020 Galwan Valley conflict, but now finds itself in turbulent waters due to government intervention.
Following Salman’s recent streak of experimental projects, anticipation for Maatrubhumi was high. However, with India and China normalizing relations, reports reveal that the Ministry of Defence raised major objections. The team, including Salman and director Lakhia, were compelled to remove all references to China, despite the story’s roots in the India-China faceoff. As per sources, "the cut of Maatrubhumi, which was submitted earlier this month, has no mention of China." Nearly 40% of the film was reshot, infusing new romantic subplots and backstories in an attempt to satisfy official concerns.
This abrupt overhaul at the tail end of production has left fans uneasy, with many questioning on social media whether the narrative can hold together without its original antagonist. Netizens are openly worried that “omitting China will do justice to the narrative,” given the entire plot’s dependence on the India–China clash.
Amidst uncertainty about its release date, the film’s creative integrity is now under scrutiny. All eyes are on the makers to see if Maatrubhumi can bounce back or if these late changes will ultimately hurt its impact.
