Tamil Film Producers Council threatens to halt new theatrical releases from September 1
Dispute centers on theatre owners' demand for an eight-week OTT release window
Film production continues, but release calendar faces uncertainty
Negotiations ongoing; outcome will affect festive season film lineup
The Tamil Film Producers Council has announced a significant move in the ongoing standoff with theatre owners regarding the OTT release window. From September 1, no new Tamil films will be released in theatres if the dispute over the theatrical-to-OTT gap is not resolved. This decision follows persistent disagreements, with theatre owners demanding an eight-week exclusive theatrical window before films debut on digital platforms. They argue that early OTT releases are drawing audiences away from cinema halls and impacting box office revenues.
Producers, however, have pushed for more flexibility, suggesting that the OTT window should depend on a film’s scale and commercial potential. The Council clarified that this is not a halt to film production itself—shooting and post-production work will continue as usual. The immediate effect is on the September release calendar, which now faces uncertainty unless a compromise is reached in the coming days.
The debate over the OTT window has been a recurring issue in Kollywood. The Producers Council had previously suggested differentiated release windows based on a film’s market size, but theatre owners have remained firm on a uniform, longer theatrical run. According to reports, theatre owners believe that "films arriving on OTT platforms soon after their theatrical release are affecting audience footfalls and the business of cinema halls."
All eyes are now on the negotiations between producers, distributors, and theatre owners. If a resolution is achieved, the release schedule could return to normal. Otherwise, Tamil Nadu’s theatres will see no new releases from September 1, leaving the industry and fans in suspense about the festive season lineup.
