Diljit Dosanjh’s film Satluj has become the centre of a heated controversy after it was abruptly removed from Zee5 just two days post its digital debut. The move has turned the spotlight on issues of censorship and historical memory, especially given the film’s sensitive subject matter.

Coming off a string of acclaimed performances, Diljit takes on the role of Jaswant Singh Khalra, the real-life human rights activist who uncovered alleged extrajudicial killings in Punjab during the 1990s. Directed by respected filmmakers and originally titled Panjab 95, the project faced lengthy delays with the CBFC, reportedly enduring years of scrutiny and demands for significant edits before finally arriving online.

The film’s unannounced removal has drawn sharp criticism from political groups and organizations like the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, who allege that it is an attempt to suppress uncomfortable truths. Social media platforms have erupted with debates, as supporters argue the takedown is a blow to creative freedom. Diljit Dosanjh himself responded pointedly, stating, “the story cannot be erased once it reaches audiences,” alluding to its continued availability outside India.

As protests and discussions intensify, Satluj’s fate remains in limbo, but the broader conversation about censorship and storytelling in Indian cinema is now front and centre. All eyes are on Zee5 and the filmmakers for further updates.
