The Telangana State Film Chamber of Commerce has announced a significant change for 23 single-screen theatres across Telangana, which will adopt a percentage-based revenue sharing model starting April 3, 2026. This new approach replaces the traditional fixed rental system, aiming to ease the financial strain on theatre owners amid rising operational costs.
These theatres, including notable venues like Hitech Theatre in Madhapur and Sridevi Theatre in Chilkalguda, will now follow a decreasing revenue share structure: 60% in the first week, 50% in the second, and 40% by the third week, with continuation depending on a film's performance. Most distributors have agreed to this change, reflecting a cooperative effort to sustain the single-screen cinema business.
This shift is seen as a strategic move to maintain regular film screenings and potentially expand to more theatres if successful. Theatre owners believe this model offers a fairer distribution of risks and rewards, responding to the challenges posed by escalating costs.
As the industry watches closely, this new system may set a precedent for how film exhibition evolves in Telangana, balancing the interests of distributors and theatre owners alike.
