Zee Entertainment's Rs 25 Cr Lawsuit Stuns Streaming World
Zee Entertainment Enterprises has sent shockwaves through the media industry by filing a massive ₹25 crore lawsuit against Jio Hotstar, the streaming giant under Reliance Industries and the Walt Disney Company. The core of this legal battle is Zee's accusation that its extensive music catalogue was used without permission in several TV programs hosted on Jio Hotstar.
Zee, boasting a music library of over 19,000 songs across Indian languages, claims that their licensing deal with Jio Hotstar expired in 2024 and 2025. Allegedly, Zee's tracks were featured at least 50 times post-expiry, leading them to argue that "the illegal exploitation thereof amounted to copyright infringement." The company has asked a New Delhi court to immediately restrain Jio Hotstar from using any of its copyrighted works on their platforms, which reportedly reach over 500 million monthly users.
Jio Hotstar, for its part, has strongly denied the allegations brought forward by Zee. As per sources, the next hearing in the ongoing dispute is scheduled for July 23rd, and the legal community is closely watching the developments.
With both media powerhouses standing firm, the outcome of this high-stakes case could have wide implications for digital content licensing. All eyes are now on the court proceedings and what this means for the future of music streaming in India.
